  1. Aha....I think I'm your FIRST commenter! Hi Karin! First off, I just bought your calendar on Red Bubble and I LOVE it. Something that I've taken from your art is how you use it to help with your depression and with the Celiac Disease. We have 3 things in common: We are both Karin/Karen, we both struggle with depression and we both have Celiac!
I actually found "You" on Zazzle about 2 years ago. Actually closer to 3 years, soon after my lower leg was amputated. I saw your painting "I Can Stand On My Hands" and somehow it made me want to recover! So I ordered a long sleeve t-shirt with that painting on it and began the long, hard road to learning to walk with a prosthesis!
If you could do a painting of a girl in a Bright Yellow wheelchair, I would LOVE it!! : )
We have a connection, my Friend! Lots of Love and Keep on doing what you do BEST! Jo

  2. Hi Karin. My artwork started when I wanted to take photos, but we were just married, and I didn't have the money for film, camera, or processing. So I got a sketch pad and pencils, and there it began. Wasn't long before I got colored pencils, markers, and glue! I made collages of things I found on the beach in Biloxi Mississippi: rocks, shells, driftwood, beach glass, whatever i could find. I made a huge wall hanging with just driftwood, and beach rocks, and it was so heavy. Don't let anyone tell you that Elmer's Glue lasts forever, because it doesn't! It wasn't long til the rocks started falling off. When I first got on line I joined a group on MSN, and there I met Dave, who became my best friend. We talked almost everyday. He was suffering from Parkinson's Disease, was a former art teacher. He confessed to me one day that the thing he missed the most was teaching, and I said... Teach me! And that is how it started. He would give me assignments, I would do them, scan them into the computer, and he would send back his critique, always encouraging me to try something new and different. I would try anything he suggested, and I usually did pretty good. Dave's PD had gotten worse now, and it's hard for him to type or even hold a paintbrush now. But he will always be my inspiration, my friend, and my mentor.
Thanks so much for allowing me to share my story here with you! barb (BCallahan)

  3. I bought a shirt with your image and love it and wear it often.
I'm new to visiting your blog, so am unsure if you want creative advice, or creative advice from your journal...
Anyway, I always tell people to:
Start big, get loose (wine is good here) and play music.
And on a more practical note:
Gesso your surface. Don't trust 'pre-primed'.
    And:
Practice, practice, draw, paint, do whatever makes you feel 'right'.
    Here endeth the lesson.
